Bread & Biscuit Stick Recipes

The quickest and easiest way to make delicious, hot doughy treats over a campfire is to use the Bread & Biscuit Stick with a package of store-bought, refrigerated dough (the pop-open tube style.) Of the many varieties available, I’ve been most successful with “buttermilk biscuits”,” French bread loaf”, “quick dinner rolls”, “turnovers” and “crescent roll” mixes. I haven’t been quite as successful with cinnamon rolls or cookie dough mixes.

DIRECTIONS:
Roll a “snake” of refrigerator dough about the diameter of your finger and 8” – 12” long. You may need 2 or 3 biscuits out of a standard package of 6-9 to have enough dough. Note, the thinner the strand the quicker it will cook. If you want your bread or biscuit doughier, then use a thicker strand, remembering to increase the cooking time accordingly.

Starting at the end of the aluminum biscuit stick, spiral the dough around the head in corkscrew fashion. Leave enough dough on the end to be able to seal it shut. Pinch the end together to close the hole and squeeze the dough tightly onto the stick to create a seal and to prevent it from unraveling after cooking. You may want to use a pinch of water when sealing the edges.

Place over hot coals (not flames), turning slowly to ensure even cooking on all sides. I find it easier to prop up the cooker with a couple of rocks so it can cook slowly without my arm getting tired!

When the dough is finished cooking, it will be soft on the inside and slightly crisp on the outside. This usually takes 8 to 12 minutes, but cooking time will vary greatly depending on the temperature of your fire, the distance from the coals, the wind, and the thickness of the dough. As with most things in life, practice makes perfect.

Pull your bread or biscuit off the head of the stick (be careful, it will be hot) and fill with your favorite filling. Kids of all ages love jelly, jam, pie filling, applesauce, cinnamon sugar, hot dogs and cooked sausages. Pudding or cream makes a decadent camp dessert. Another versatile filling is cheese. Try American or pepper jack for a grilled cheese sandwich or ricotta and pepperoni for calzone or simply butter and honey.

CAUTION:
This product should be used with care. The aluminum head will remain hot long after it is removed from the fire. Not intended for use by children without adult supervision.
