Hand Thermometer

When you don’t have a thermometer this is way to judge how hot your fire is. Hold your hand palm down where the food will be cooking. Count “one one-thousandths”, “two one-thousandths”. “ three one thousandths”…..etc. for as many seconds you can hold your hand still. Move your hand around to find the spot with the temperature you want.

Seconds Counted Heat  Temperature
6-8 Slow 250-350F
4-5 Moderate 350-400F
2-3  Hot  400-450F
1 or less Very Hot  450-500F
